Cows' milk as a standard liquid milk, should not be given to babies under 12 months of age as the main milk drink. It is not a good source of iron and contains levels of protein and sodium that are too high. Infant formula based on cows' milk is fine for use from birth as the formula composition is modified to be as close as possible to breastmilk. Infants can tolerate small amounts of standard cows' milk as part of solid foods (e.g. yoghurt) from around 8 months.
