Nutrition Terms

We've included the following descriptions to help you better understand some of the terms used in relation to infant formula.

Cows' milk as a standard liquid milk, should not be given to babies under 12 months of age as the main milk drink. It is not a good source of iron and contains levels of protein and sodium that are too high. However, infant formula based on cows' milk is fine for use from birth as the formula composition is modified to be as close as possible to breastmilk. Infants can tolerate small amounts of standard cows' milk as part of solid foods (e.g. yoghurt on cereal) from around 8 months.

Casein and Whey are two different groups of proteins which are present in both breastmilk and cows' milk. The protein component of breastmilk is predominantly whey proteins. Whey proteins are thought to be more easily digested than casein proteins. For this reason, most infant formulas suitable from birth (starter formulas) are whey dominant (60% whey:40% casein).

Heinz NurtureŽ Starter Infant Formula and Heinz Nurture Gold ToddlerŽ Starter Infant Formula are both whey dominant infant formulas with a whey to casein ratio similar to breastmilk. (60:40).

Heinz NurtureŽ Follow-On Formula and Heinz Nurture Gold ToddlerŽ Follow-On Formula are casein dominant formulas. These formulas have a whey:casein ratio similar to cows' milk (20:80) which makes it slower to digest and therefore more suitable for infants over 6 months of age.

Nucleotides are nutrients naturally present in our bodies which are also found in breastmilk. They may play a role in developing strong immune systems and have a number of different functions that support growth and development.
Some infant formulas may contain up to five different types of nucleotides.

Heinz NurtureŽ contains nucleotides.

If these have been added, they will be listed in the ingredients list and the nutrition information panel.

Gold formulas contain added Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (LCPs). LCPs are part of two families of fatty acids called: the omega-3 and the omega-6 series. The two LCPs added to Gold formulas are Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid and Arachidonic Acid (ARA), an omega-6 fatty acid. ARA and DHA are naturally present in several foods, including breastmilk.

Both adults and babies need LCPs. There are a number of studies that suggest that the addition of DHA in formula, in particular, may help brain and visual development.

Bifidus is a friendly (probiotic) bacteria found in our gut, which helps encourage healthy digestion and supports natural defenses against harmful bacteria. A healthy balance of ‘friendly’ bacteria in the gut can help in the development of babies’ immune system.

Bifidobacterium probiotics are naturally found in the gut of breast fed infants. ‘Bifidus’ (Bifidobacterium lactis) is added to Heinz Nurture Gold ToddlerŽ Infant formula and Heinz Nurture Gold ToddlerŽ Follow on formula.
