Getting started

Breastfeeding is natural but that doesn't mean it's always instinctive. It's a new skill for you both and one of the first things you learn to do together.

Step one is easy. Get yourself comfortable. A cushion behind your back and a pillow to support your baby can be useful.

Hold your baby with her body turned towards you and her nose opposite your nipple. Move her towards your breast, so that her top lip brushes against your nipple. She'll know instinctively to open her mouth really wide.

As soon as she does this, seize your chance. Move her quickly onto your nipple so that she has got a big mouthful of breast. If you have got it right, most of your areola (the dark area surrounding your nipple) will be covered and, as your baby starts to feed the top of her ear will move.

If you don't get it right first time, don't worry – it takes a little time and patience and a little practice. Slip your little finger (clean) into the corner of your baby's mouth so that she lets go of your nipple and try again.
