When it comes to feeding your baby, breastmilk is the very best source of nutrition.

It supplies all the nutrients they need for the first 6 months of life.

Most mothers are able to breastfeed and choose to do so. It's convenient, provides all the nutrients your baby needs for healthy growth and development - and it's free!

For support with breastfeeding, contact your Child Health Nurse, a lactation consultant or the Australian Breastfeeding Association (www.breastfeeding.asn.au).

Select a topic from the menu on the left to find out more on breastfeeding in this section.

Note: Cows' milk is not suitable as a main milk drink for infants until 12 months of age. If a decision is made not to breastfeed, choose a suitable infant formula instead. (see Choosing a Formula)

Formula is the only suitable choice for the first 12 months when baby is not breastfed..
